As we step into Women’s History Month, I am filled with pride and gratitude for the remarkable women who have paved the way in education and beyond. As the CEO of SSA Education Abroad, and more importantly, as a woman in the study abroad sector, I am acutely aware of the challenges and triumphs that come with our territory.

The Role of Women in Study Abroad

The study abroad industry, much like many others, has seen a transformative shift thanks to the relentless efforts and leadership of women. From educators to program coordinators, women have been at the forefront, crafting experiences that not only transcend borders but also expand minds and hearts. Their role is not just pivotal; it is revolutionary, shaping global citizens who view the world through a lens of equality and understanding.

Empowerment in Our Programs

At SSA Education Abroad, empowerment is not just a concept; it’s a practice. Our programs are meticulously crafted to highlight the achievements and challenges of women globally, encouraging students to engage with diverse perspectives and understand the profound impact women have on society.

  • Educational Content and Courses: Offering courses that focus on gender studies, women’s history, and feminist literature, such as those highlighting the achievements and struggles of Spanish women writers and global feminist movements.
  • Partnerships with Local Women’s Organizations: Collaborating with entities like Fakali (FederaciΓ³n de Asociaciones de Mujeres Gitanas) and AsociaciΓ³n Amiga, providing students with internships and volunteer opportunities that contribute to female empowerment and understanding of women’s rights issues in Spain.
  • Cultural and Educational Events: Organizing and participating in events such as the 8M (International Women’s Day) marches, talks during Diversity and Inclusion week, and other activities that promote awareness and discussion around feminism and women’s rights.
  • Safety and Awareness Guidance: Providing comprehensive orientation guides that address the realities of being a woman abroad, including advice on handling catcalling, understanding local feminist organizations, and ensuring personal safety at night.
  • Promotion of Female Role Models: Highlighting influential women through educational materials and activities, including literature by female authors, podcasts, movies, and songs that celebrate women’s contributions and resilience.
  • Supportive Community: Creating a supportive environment that encourages female students to share their experiences, learn from each other, and form a network of solidarity, including emphasizing the role of male allies.
  • Resources and Support Systems: Offering resources such as the official action guide against sexist violence, information on “Puntos Violetas” for assistance in cases of sexist aggression, and guidance on navigating cultural differences and personal safety issues.
  • Empowerment Through Reflection: Encouraging students to reflect on their experiences and the role of women in society through writing, discussion, and community engagement, fostering a deeper understanding of gender equality and women’s rights.

Empowerment Within Our Company

At SSA Education Abroad, we live female empowerment every day. The majority of our administrative staff are talented women, all our Regional Directors are women, and I, as CEO, embody our commitment to female leadership. These facets of our company not only demonstrate our dedication to women’s empowerment but also serve as a role model for our students and the global community.

Moving Forward

But our work is far from over. As we commemorate this month, let us also commit to ongoing learning and advocacy. Let’s continue to support and elevate women in all our endeavors, ensuring they have the platforms and opportunities to succeed and be heard.

I invite you all to join me in reflecting on the progress we’ve made and the journey ahead. Let’s celebrate the incredible women in our lives and our work, not just this month, but every day.

Warm regards,
