In order to receive the stipulation “Graduate Credit” on a transcript, students must:
There is an additional fee of US$60.00 per credit, to be paid to SSA by the final payment deadline.
Interested students are invited to contact our U.S. office at [email protected] or (413) 256-0011.
Graduate students may earn graduate-level credit for a summer internship. SSA may accommodate students interested in completing an 8-week internship according to the summer format, during other times of the year. Interested students must apply for these programs 10 weeks in advance of their expected arrival date.
Gain hands-on experience side-by-side with local workers and volunteers while earning credit and learning Spanish. Learn through experience and reflection. SSA draws from its extensive network of collaborators to find the most appropriate placement for each student.
Semester and summer-long internships allow you to gain professional experience while improving your Spanish. Internships and service learning opportunities allow you access to the work culture and daily life of local citizens, often hidden to students studying abroad, and to more fully integrate into the local culture.
When applying for an internship or service learning project, you have the benefit of specifying what you would like your internship to look like. SSA will strive to match you with the best available placement to help you integrate into sevillano work culture.
Internships focus on practical experience in a local business, while service learning projects focus on engagement in the local culture through community service in a local organization. The curricula of the Seville Internship programs are centered around your individual work experience. Complementary courses help you to work through the linguistic and cultural challenges you may run into while in the field.
Fields of Placement:
SSA will work hard to match you with an appropriate placement to meet your interests. Students have completed placements in a variety of fields including legal offices, Greenpeace, television production, journalism, education, and more.

Graduate credit may be earned for the following summer courses:
If you can’t get away for a full semester, short-term programs are the best option. Courses offered at all levels of Spanish, in most disciplines: general Spanish language, Spanish for the professions, literature and history, business and economics, education and health sciences, social sciences, and more. We offer January, May, and/or Summer Terms.
The Summer program comprises two 3 1/2 week terms offering an intensive academic experience with a rich cultural component. Students live in Spanish homes and participate in a full array of study tours, cultural events, and social activities. An oral and written Spanish language placement test is given during orientation each to enable students to work at his or her level of proficiency. The Director uses this test in conjunction with the student’s previous experience to advise which course best suits their individual needs.
PROGRAM INFORMATION
EDUCATION COURSES
During Summer Term 1, SSA offers The Psychology of Learning a Second Language, taught in English by the esteemed educational scholar and psychologist, Dr. Frank Castrillón. In this course, students acquire tools to identify the psychological aspects that facilitate and sometimes impede the learning of a foreign language. Graduate credit is available for this course (see Graduate Credit Options for details). Students who enroll in this course are encouraged to apply for the Practicum in Education.
The Practicum in Education, offered during Summer Term 2, is an educational internship in which students earn 4-semester credits and acquire hands-on teaching experience. Students work as Teacher Assistants and teach English to Spanish children aged 4 to 12 enrolled in the Playschool program at the Center. Former or current SSA students, as well as those applying to a Summer Term, are eligible to apply for the Practicum.
Also, during Summer Term 2, SSA offers a summer course specifically designed for teachers of Spanish as a second language and university students preparing to teach, called “Seminar for Teachers of Spanish: Culture in the Classroom.” In this course, students focus on creating methods and materials to develop communicative competence in their students and introduce the linguistic and socio-cultural aspects of Spanish to their classroom. Graduate credit is available for this course (see Graduate Credit Options for details).
HEALTH AND BUSINESS COURSES
During Summer Term 1, SSA offers two professional development courses in business and health:

The Practicum in Education offers students with an interest in teaching and Spanish the chance to gain valuable professional experience over the course of a summer in Seville, Spain. Students enrolled in the Practicum work as Teacher’s Assistants in our Center’s “Playschool” program for Spanish children aged four to twelve.
Playschool is a 5-week language immersion program in an urban summer camp setting. Playschool students attend an hour of English class each day, but the goal is for Playschool students to learn through context-rich activities and routines that happen throughout the day. These include theater, cooking, science experiments, field trips, and more. In fact, much of the learning happens outside of the class, as students naturally acquire the language from the English immersion setting.
Practicum students who will work with these children will participate in all the activities the teachers do:
The contact hours are divided in the following way:
Structured Field Experience: 125 hours in the classroom
Second Language Acquisition Study: 25 hours of individual study
You may apply to just the 5-week practicum, however, many students choose to combine the Practicum with the Summer Term 1 and/or May Term. In addition to the academic benefits, the additional time allows students time to settle into Seville before taking on the Practicum responsibilities and interacting with Spanish students, making them more qualified teachers. Also, SSA provides a special tuition waiver and an extra week of room and board, free of charge, for students who enroll in both summer terms, making this unique internship a financially viable option for study abroad.
The practicum dates align with Summer Term 2. Students work in the Playschool for 180 internship hours to earn four credits.
Students that wish to boost their Spanish or earn more credit over the summer may opt to enroll in the Summer Term 1 prior to beginning the Practicum. Students will take a Spanish language or culture course for four credits. The course The Psychology of Learning a Second Language is recommended for students who will enroll in the Practicum.
Students may combine the Summer Term 1 and the Practicum with an additional three credits of intensive language study during the 2.5-week May term. This combination provides students with the opportunity to a minimum of 11 credits over the summer and will better prepare them for their work in the playschool classroom.
Note: Students may also enroll in optional “Living the Culture” courses, each bearing one credit. Click here for details.
The ideal candidate is a student with a strong interest in both the theoretical and practical aspects of language acquisition. To qualify, applicants should meet the following criteria:
To apply, students must complete both the general SSA Application and the specific Practicum in Education Application. See the instructions below.
Complete an Online Application for a Seville Practicum in Education Summer Program.
Practicum assignments are limited. Acceptance decisions will be made on a rolling basis. Late applications may be considered.
