Here, we give you the 7 best day trips from Alicante you must visit during your semester. Remember that transportation to and from these places is simple – by bus or train.
1. Altea
Altea is a quaint little town located 58 kilometers northeast of Alicante. Like Santorini, the small town is beautiful, with whitewashed buildings and small cobblestone streets. Lying just off the main coastal road, Altea sits atop a hill and may be reached by bus or tram. Enjoy trendy boutiques, delicious food from local restaurants, and the perfect photo opportunity for your Instagram feed.
2. Canelobre Caves
If you’re looking for a bit more of a unique day trip, look no further than the Canelobre Caves. Located just 25 kilometers north of Alicante, the Canelobre Caves are a perfect destination for the adventurous spirit. The caves are a natural wonder, originating 7 million years ago. Nearby there are hiking trails and the Cabeço d’Or, a 1,205-meter mountain with breathtaking views.
3. Murcia (capital)
Murcia is another great day trip spot, located about an hour from Alicante. The city is reminiscent of medieval times, with a large, Gothic, baroque Cathedral alongside the colorful 18th-century Palacio Episcopal. Known for its Huerta and famous products exported throughout Europe, Murcia is a slice of authentic Spanish life. Enjoy a mud bath or thermal spa, and remember to take a photo with the flamingos!
4. Guadalest and Algar Waterfalls
Off the beaten path, Guadalest is an iconic mountain village nestled between city walls, boasting a fantastic view of the Guadalest Valley and castle. Soak in the breathtaking scenery with several hiking trails, or enjoy a coffee on the terrace. If you have time, schedule a visit to the Algar Waterfalls with the stunning turquoise water and landscape. The two locations are roughly an hour from Alicante.
5. Benidorm
Known as one of the most popular Alicante day trips, Benidorm is a seaside resort town with a bustling nightlife. Public transportation makes the trip to Benidorm easily accessible with a €5 bus ticket or €6,40 roundtrip tram ticket. The two beaches, Levante Beach and Poniente Beach stretch 2,084 and 3,100 meters, respectively, leaving plenty of opportunity for a sun-soaked day along Costa Blanca. Walk along the boulevard, take in the multiple skyscrapers, bars, and restaurants, or enjoy an afternoon at Aqualandia Waterpark. Take the time to stop by Villajoyosa along the way, a small coastal town full of colorful houses and the perfect photo opportunity.
6. Calpe
Another town destined for the athletic adventurer, Calpe, is located about an hour north of Alicante via tram. Home to the Peñon de Ifache, an impressive rock formation that sticks out of the ocean at 332 meters tall. Take the two-hour climb to the top of the rock for incredible ocean views. Afterward, cool off with a dip in the Baños de la Reina, ancient Roman ruins of a fish farm and thermal bath complex.
7. Tabarca Island
The picturesque Tabarca Island is located just off the coast of Alicante and is accessible by ferry, with roundtrip tickets costing €21. The island is home to only 50-60 inhabitants and is a fantastic getaway for the opportunity to fully connect with nature, culture, and relaxation in the Mediterranean. The seabed surrounding the island makes Tabarca a true treasure, designating it as Spain’s first Marine Reserve. Rent a paddle board or diving gear and explore the beautiful fish and crystal clear waters. Fuel up before returning to the mainland with the best Caldero (stew) in the entire province of Alicante.
