5 Ways to Spend Siesta in Alicante

Students relaxing by the. water's edge in Alicante

Table of Contents

Siesta (noun): an afternoon rest or nap, especially one taken during the hottest hours of the day in a hot climate.

While studying in Alicante, you will quickly become familiar with the siesta. This is typically a 3-hour time frame for the afternoon meal with family and a break throughout the workday. Many businesses, shops, and banks close down during this window, and fewer people walk through the streets.

You’ll often want to participate in a siesta and take a midday nap. On some days, however, you may be looking for more. Read on for five alternative ideas to the siesta to get the most out of your time in Alicante.

Playa del Postiguet

Known as one of Alicante’s most beautiful beaches, Playa del Postiguet stretches down the length of the city. Spend your afternoon siesta lounging on the white sand beach with the turquoise water of the Mediterranean.

A great spot to bring a picnic, a good book, or even your homework, this beach is sure to quickly become your favorite spot in the city. Enjoy coffee or tapas at nearby cafΓ©s and restaurants, and always pack your sunscreen.

La Explanada de EspaΓ±a

La Explanada de EspaΓ±a is Alicante’s iconic and most beautiful promenade in the city. Created in 1867 by architect Jose Guardiola Pico, the promenade is constructed of 6.6 million red, cream, and black tiles to enhance the Spanish custom of an evening stroll.

The rolling Mediterranean waves influenced the unique pattern and are surrounded by beautiful palm trees lining the walkway. If you go closer to the evening hours, browse through the market stalls full of handmade jewelry, bags, rugs, and much more. There’s also a great selection of cafΓ©s and bars for coffee, pinchos, or churros.

Barrio de Santa Cruz

You may have heard of the popular El Barrio, the historical heart of Alicante. Though we still recommend spending time in El Barrio, it is also important to note the beauty of the quieter Barrio de Santa Cruz. This residential old town is located on the hillside with winding streets and the feeling of an authentic, quaint Spanish town.

With aging buildings, cobblestone streets, and whitewashed walls blooming with colorful flowers, Barrio de Santa Cruz is the perfect picturesque spot to spend an afternoon. Enjoy a coffee or traditional paella and get a feel for the historical past of Alicante.

Soho Mar, Marina

The Marina is, of course, located along the water, showcasing a spectacular view of yachts and beautiful blue waters. Home to several cafΓ©s and bars, Soho Mar makes our list with its delicious coffee and cocktails. Take a book or homework and enjoy a lazy afternoon along the coast.

As the sun goes down, stroll down the water’s edge among the lights reflecting off the smooth surface.

Parque el Palmeral

Pack a blanket and some snacks, and catch the C6 airport bus or a train to Parque el Palmeral when you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Relax in this beautiful park with botanical wildlife, waterfalls, and dozens of palm trees. Gather your friends for a mid-week picnic and bask in the tranquil lifestyle of the Spanish. You may even enjoy a quick nap among the palm trees!

If you always knew you were made for a more relaxed and friendly lifestyle, then Alicante is a great location to work on your Spanish. Make sure to meet with an advisor at your college’s education abroad office, as they will also be able to direct you toward the right program for your degree path.
