Program Overview
Welcome to our Professional Development Seminar for Spanish Teachers and Professors, hosted in the vibrant city of Alicante, Spain. This summer, join us for an enriching opportunity to delve into the latest advancements in language-learning techniques. Designed with a hands-on, practical approach, our seminar is structured into independent, yet complementary, 4-hour sessions. Participants will not only learn about innovative tools, ideas, and resources but also actively engage in the activities they will later bring to their classrooms. This experience promises to equip educators with new strategies to inspire and motivate their students in learning Spanish.

Week 1
One classroom session will be dedicated to each of the following (actual titles may vary slightly):
- Technology in the Classroom
- Culture in the Classroom
- Boosting Oral Skills
- Presenting Grammar in a Fun Way
- Developing Reading Skills
BLOCK 1 - WHAT DO I TEACH? CAN I MAKE IT EVEN BETTER?
- Session 1 - How to develop oral skills in the Spanish classroom | How to develop written skills | Integration of skills.
- Session 2 - The teaching of grammar and vocabulary with a highly practical approach
- Session 3 - The development of intercultural awareness | The material and my context: a complex relationship | What is situated learning?
BLOCK 2 - WHO DO I TEACH? STUDENTS IN THE XXI CENTURY
- Session 4 - How to motivate my students? | Individual variables in learning | New technology | "News for whom?" | Technological resources and creativity in the ELE classroom.
- Session 5 - Audiovisual resources in the ELE class of the 21st century | Audiovisual literacy | Multimodal learning | Importance of social networks in today's Spanish classroom.
Week 2
-
Week 2 is focused on a series of “hands-on” workshops of the topics discussed in Week 1. It includes overviews of general SLA theories and demonstrations and analysis of instructional approaches.
- Classroom time will be dedicated to the crafting and performance of activities to use in the classroom and to “test out” the exercises and activities presented by the instructor. Participants will also get a chance to be “teachers” again in the classroom, in order to get constructive feedback from the UA teaching methodology instructors and fellow participants.
- The first hour of class will be an in-depth review of the day’s topic session led by the head instructor and guest lecturers. The remaining hours each will focus on the practice of these approaches to help participants be comfortable with different methodologies.
