Rebecca — Le Moyne College

We sat down with Rebecca, a student from Le Moyne College, to talk about her academic and personal experience studying in San Juan, Puerto Rico. What began as a study abroad program quickly became a transformative journey of language, culture, and self-discovery.

How would you describe your academic experience in the program?

My academic experience in the program was truly amazing. The small class size created an intimate and supportive learning environment where I felt comfortable participating, asking questions, and engaging deeply with the material. Our professor was incredibly approachable and genuinely invested in our growth. By the end of the course, our class felt like a small community, which made the final day especially bittersweet. Learning in this environment went far beyond academics.

Which courses, projects, or assignments had the biggest impact on you?

The final presentation had the biggest impact on me. We were given the freedom to choose a topic we felt passionate about, and I chose to focus on Puerto Rico—its beauty, culture, and personal significance to me. I reflected on how I wished my mother had brought me to the island sooner so I could have formed more memories there growing up. It was incredibly meaningful to blend academic work with personal reflection and cultural identity.

How did studying in a Spanish-speaking environment influence your learning or perspective?

Studying in a Spanish-speaking environment was exactly what I needed. Although I understood Spanish well, I lacked confidence in speaking it. Being immersed in the language pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way possible. I became more confident communicating, asking questions, and engaging with others. It reminded me that growth often happens when we lean into discomfort.

What was your favorite part of living and studying in San Juan?

There was so much to love, but what stood out most was the walkability of the city and the weather. Being able to walk everywhere made daily life feel slower and more intentional. I also loved how close the school was to the beach—just a 20-minute walk. Spending time near the ocean became one of the most grounding parts of my day.

Was there a moment, class, or activity that felt especially meaningful?

One especially meaningful realization was how connected I felt—to the city, the language, and my heritage. Whether it was navigating daily life in Spanish, participating in class discussions, or simply walking through San Juan, those small moments collectively made the experience feel transformative rather than temporary.

How has this program contributed to your personal, academic, or professional growth?

This program allowed me to deeply connect with my mother’s heritage and gain insight into what her lived experience may have been like. Personally, it strengthened my sense of identity and confidence. Academically, it challenged me to think critically and present thoughtfully in a new cultural context. Overall, it broadened my perspective in ways I will carry with me forever.

Would you recommend this program to other students? Why?

Absolutely. This program goes far beyond studying abroad—it allows you to truly live in Puerto Rico and engage with the island on a deeper level. The combination of academics, culture, and personal growth made it unforgettable. I genuinely wish I could return every summer.

Anything else you’d like to share?

This experience gave me lasting memories, confidence, and a stronger connection to my roots. It reminded me of the importance of cultural exploration, presence, and learning beyond the classroom. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity and will carry it with me for the rest of my life.

A Lasting Impact Beyond the Classroom

Rebecca’s experience in San Juan reflects what study abroad can offer at its best: not just academic enrichment, but personal clarity, cultural connection, and growth that continues long after the program ends. Through language immersion, meaningful coursework, and daily life in the city, learning became something lived rather than observed. Her story is a reminder that education can be transformative when students are given the space to connect knowledge with identity—and when study abroad becomes not a moment in time, but a lasting perspective.
