New Research Confirms: Study Abroad Builds Skills and Boosts Earnings

A new national study from The Forum on Education Abroad underscores the career value of international experiences. According to the report, students who studied abroad earn $4,159 more in their first job after graduation than peers who did not a 6.3% increase in starting salaries.

Beyond financial outcomes, the findings highlight the transformative skill development that occurs through study abroad:

  • Over 90% of alumni believe their experience abroad strengthened essential professional skills.
  • The top skills identified include adaptability (85.4%), interpersonal communication (85.2%), and intercultural competence (83%).
  • Nearly half of respondents credited their study abroad experience as a significant factor in advancing their careers.

SSA programs are designed precisely around these competencies linking language immersion, experiential learning, and cultural engagement to tangible professional growth.

“Study abroad prepares graduates to navigate complexity, collaborate across cultures, and lead with empathy skills that today’s employers consistently rank as essential.”
